Al has a BS degree in Actuarial Science and Finance, from the University of Illinois at Urbana.

Hel joined Milliman in 2009. Al’s primary responsibilities involve industry experience studies and mortality, longevity, and underwriting issues. Al’s expertise includes traditional products, simplified issue, final expense, older age, preferred, and more recently issues related to COVID-19. Prior to Milliman, Al has worked for several life insurance companies, a consulting firm, and a reinsurer, where he has been responsible for experience studies, product development, and strategic planning.

Al is an active member of the SOA and observer/participant with the International Actuarial Association Mortality Forum. Al’s activities include being the chair of the SOA Underwriting Innovations Symposium planning committee and the Unhealthy Longevity project oversight group. Al is also a member of the SOA Mortality and Longevity Steering Committee, the Mortality Improvement model development and survey teams, the 2015 Valuation Basic Table development team, and the International Underwriting Study Group. He is also a member of the Longer Life Foundation Advisory Board. Al formerly served on the SOA Board of Directors and was a co-Vice Chair of the IAA Mortality Working Group.

Al is a frequent speaker and has written a number of articles. He has received the following awards: A SOA 2017 Outstanding Volunteer; First place in the SOA Product Development Section call for essays (2018), Most Creative Actuarial Career for the SOA Speculative Fiction Contest (2021); and SOA Outstanding Session (2016, 2018, and 2021).
